Year 4 pupils at St John Vianney in Hartlepool enjoyed an exciting and educational trip, exploring key historical sites including Hadrian’s Wall and Cragside.
The visit gave pupils the opportunity to bring their classroom learning to life, experiencing history first-hand while developing their knowledge in a real-world setting.
Discovering Hadrian’s Wall
The day began with Year 4 arriving safely at Hadrian’s Wall, where they quickly made the most of their surroundings despite blustery weather conditions. Spirits remained high as pupils explored the famous Roman landmark and took in its historical significance.
Not letting the rain disrupt their learning, the children visited the Hadrian’s Wall Museum, where they stepped back in time to discover what life was like for a Roman soldier.
During the museum visit, pupils:
- explored a range of historical artefacts
- learned about Roman culture and daily life
- gained a deeper understanding of the importance of Hadrian’s Wall
The experience helped bring their history learning to life in an engaging and memorable way.
Exploring Cragside
Later in the trip, Year 4 travelled to Cragside, where they arrived safely and enjoyed a well-earned lunch after a busy morning.
Pupils then explored the historic house and its beautiful grounds, learning more about how people lived in the past. The visit provided valuable insight into history beyond the classroom, allowing children to connect their learning to real places and environments.
Creativity in the Outdoors
While visiting Cragside, pupils also took time to sketch different areas of the grounds. Surrounded by inspiring views, the children produced some fantastic drawings, combining creativity with observation.
This activity allowed pupils to:
- develop their artistic skills
- engage more closely with their surroundings
- reflect on their learning in a creative way
A Memorable Learning Experience
The trip was a wonderful opportunity for pupils to experience history, culture and creativity all in one day. From exploring Roman Britain to discovering life in a historic home, Year 4 embraced every moment with enthusiasm.
Staff at St John Vianney, Hartlepool praised the children for their positive attitude and engagement throughout the visit.
